What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of controlled excerises combining the mind and body for a full-body workout. Emphasis is placed on the breath, alignment and quality of movement. Pilates combines strength and flexibility training in order to create long and lean muscles, improve posture, and condition the mind. It works various muscle groups through continuous movements while stabilizing the core.

What is the Pilates reformer machine?
The Pilates reformer machine is a bed-like frame with a moveable carriage where a person sits or reclines during his or her workout. This creates ease on the joints while working your muscles. There are different accessories that are used to enhance your workout including straps, long boxes and bands. You will learn how to properly use these accessories in your first Pilates class. If you feel that you need additional help in getting acquianting with the machine, we recommend scheduling a private lesson.

What are the benefits from practicing Pilates?
The benefits of Pilates includes long and lean muscles, improved posture, increased range of motion, reduced stress, better mind and body connection, enhanced mobility and agility, increased brain function, and overall better sense of wellbeing.

What is the difference between mat Pilates and Pilates reformer?
Mat Pilates uses your body weight to control the resistence of the movements. The Pilates reformer machine uses a special carriage and springs to change the resistence of the movements and the degree of difficulty. This can help simplify movements for beginners and increase difficulty as you become more advanced.

How is Pilates different from yoga?
Pilates uses similar postures as yoga while controlling the breath through movement. Both use dynamic stretches while engaging the core to create long and lean muscles. Emphasis is on deep breaths with long movements to allow the muscles to relax and lengthen. Pilates is more focused on repetition of movements, rather than static movements flowing from one to the next.

What should I wear to my first Pilates class?
Please wear fitted clothing with your hair up to avoid getting caught in the machine. We recommend practicing barefoot and not wearing socks. We do not wear shoes on the machines.

How many days a week should I practice Pilates?
For the best results, we recommend practicing 2-3 days per week.
